Treatment for Keratoconus

Keratoconus leads to a reduction in vision, an increase in astigmatism and the introduction of aberrations that reduce the quality of vision.

Keratoconus is a condition affecting about 1 in 2000 people where the collagen fibres in the cornea are relatively loosely arranged and not tightly bound to one another as it would be in a healthy cornea. The result is that the fibres can slip over one another and cause a steepening (cone) of the lower half of the cornea. This leads to a reduction in vision, an increase in astigmatism and the introduction of aberrations that reduce the quality of vision.

Keratoconus Management at the Wellington Eye Clinic

The Wellington Eye Clinic would like to introduce a new research study, Accelerated Corneal Cross-Linking (AXL), which will reduce procedure time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes by using a higher intensity Ultra-Violet lamp.

Corneal cross-linking is a procedure that we have been doing at the Wellington Eye Clinic since January 2007 when the UV-X device which is used for the treatment received CE approval. We were the first clinic in Ireland to offer CXL for treatment of keratoconus.

The procedure will deliver same total energy to the cornea as the original cross-linking for progressive keratoconus, with a reduced treatment time being the only difference. The standard corneal cross-linking takes over an hour for each eye, which involves receiving.

This is an exciting time for the Wellington Eye Clinic and we expect the outcome of the study to be very positive for the future of Corneal Cross-Linking.

NOMINATION FOR HEALTH AWARD

Dr Arthur Cummings was recently nominated as a finalist for the 2011 Innovation Healthcare Awards held at the Burlington Hotel.

Dr Cummings had been nominated for his invention SimLC which is a treatment for a disease called keratoconus.

Keratoconus causes a steepening of the eyes cornea which can significantly reduce the quality of vision and lead to blindness.
